KEN JENNINGS: Confessions of a Trivial Mind
BLOG

February 17, 2009

A reader (and fellow BYU alum) named Sameer emailed me last week with some fascinating information about quiz competition in his native Bangalore, which he calls “the quizzing capital of India.”

Sameer clued me into an annual Internet quiz contest run by a Bangalore quiz association, cleverly called Go Ogle. You can check out this year’s questions (in slideshow form) and answers (spoilers, don’t scroll down too far!) here.

Go Ogle appears to be one part “cryptic” (i.e. British-style) crossword, based on puns, anagrams, and other wordplay, and one part trivia contest, with an Internet scavenger hunt angle built in for good measure. Sameer says, “Quizzing in india is typically not based on fact 100%,” which I thought was an odd claim, but the Go Ogle questions sort of bear that out: answers are suggested with shades of meaning, not precisely “pinned” factual material. It’s a very different animal from any U.S. trivia competition I’ve ever seen.

Well worth a look. Or, if that’s not your thing, check out the recently announced movie Pride and Predator, a Jane Austen movie with an alien invasion in the middle. Really.
