KEN JENNINGS: Confessions of a Trivial Mind
BLOG

February 19, 2009

On Sunday, for the first time in my life, I had breakfast for all three meals.

This was entirely unintentional. The sweet roll I ate for breakfast was only because somebody was handing them out at a thing.

I had a bowl of Cookie Crisp for lunch. Sadly, this one was intentional. I never really get hungry for breakfast on a normal day, so I never get to eat all the sweetened kids’ cereals I’d like to. I saw the kids eating a bowl of cereal and couldn’t hold back.

Then Mindy–unaware of my streak, mind you!–announced she was making waffles for dinner. Who would complain about that? Everyone loves waffles. Plus I thought she might make this pecan butter she sometimes makes, so I kept my mouth shut. (And she did. Well, walnut butter, anyway. We were out of pecans.)

I didn’t realize until I was lying in bed the night the remarkable nature of what I’d done. Should I check WebMD and see if there were likely to be side effects? Should I call Guinness? Would doctors want to study me?

Looking back now, lo these many days later, I have no regrets. I’m not exaggerating when I say that breakfast is always everyone’s favorite meal ever. Think about it. Diner menus never brag that they serve “Lunch All Day!” or “Supper All Day!” Other meals are never so delicious that they can creep into other meals’ evolutionary niches, reproducing and producing mutant hybrids. Why brunch? Because breakfast is better than lunch and lunch knows it. Nobody wants linner or dupper.

All the most delicious foods ever discovered by science are pretty much reserved for breakfast: French toast, maple syrup, bacon, smoked salmon, fruit juice, Frosted Mini-Wheats, etc. What can lunch claim that would make it on that list? Iceberg lettuce? Miracle Whip? Hot Pockets? Screw that.

Try the three-breakfast experiment someday soon–just like Jeopardy!’s Ken Jennings! Your stomach will thank you, and your arteries don’t get a vote. This message brought to you by the Breakfast Council of America.
