KEN JENNINGS: Confessions of a Trivial Mind
BLOG

November 18, 2009

How quickly they grow up. Dylan used to appear on this blog mostly in the form of his recurring feature “Bewildering Conversations with a Three-Year-Old”…and this week he turns seven! He also came up with the idea for a little Wordplay Wednesday, which I was pretty impressed with (dads are an easy crowd) and refined into the below.

Take a word for “someplace a good sailor in the Navy will spend eight or nine weeks.” Reverse the order of its syllables phonetically (e.g. turn “cursing” into “sinker”) and you’ll get the name for someplace where no good Navy sailor wants to spend even a single week! What is this word and its nautical “opposite”?

Happy birthday, Dylan!

Edited to add: Landlubber Ed Toutant got this one first.
