There is just no American holiday that has as awesome a name as Australia’s National Sorry Day. Isn’t there some U.S. tragedy (the Trail of Tears? Japanese internment camps maybe?) that we can commemorate as “National Oops Day” or “National We Goofed Day” or “Boy Is Our National Face Red! Day”?
Dylan’s into space right now so we spent yesterday afternoon watching the NASA TV footage of mission control as the Phoenix lander touched down on Mars. It’s been 32 years since anything’s succesfully landed on Mars via rocket descent, and Dylan was keenly aware of the suspense. “Mom, only five of thirteen Mars probes landed safely! The other eight crashed!” he yelled at Mindy when she made the mistake of walking by. When Phoenix landed successfully, and everyone was hugging and high-fiving at JPL, Dylan was beaming. “Now eight have crashed and six have landed!” he said.
