KEN JENNINGS: Confessions of a Trivial Mind
BLOG

June 5, 2008

Considering that yesterday’s post revolved around “backward-masking” of sounds, like “Another One Bites the Dust” subliminally making kids want to smoke marijuana, I just heard something apropos on the radio. They were playing a live version I’d never heard before of “Add It Up” by the Violent Femmes. I assumed they’d blank out parts of the third verse, but instead, they just played the phonetic reversal of the word in question. Gordon Gano seemed very, very anxious to know why he couldn’t get “just one cuff.” He must need a new tailor.

Great news earlier this week: a new DVD is coming of the classic Robert Mitchum Gothic-Expressionist fable/thriller/curio The Night of the Hunter, which I occasionally tell people is my favorite movie of all time. (When asked, that is…I don’t just go up to people in the grocery store to tell them that.)

September 9 release date. I assume it’ll include a new print, and some of the footage that Elsa Lanchester kept of her husband Charles Laughton making the film. (His only directorial effort, sadly.) Long overdue.
