After spending a few days in beautiful Stockholm to get over the jetlag, we flew into Venice yesterday. If there’s one city in the world that looks like a special effect, a made up Star Wars one-biome planet all the way, it’s probably Venice. We were here a few years ago, but this time we have a full week to explore and some local friends to show us around. Today we went out to Burano, an island in Venice’s lagoon that makes lots of lace and paints its houses improbable colors.

This is our first time trying a big overseas trip with the kids, and it’s actually gone pretty smoothly. By which I mean, lots of minor meltdowns but so far none that haven’t been fixable with gelato. (Traveling with friends and their kids has really helped. Tonight the gaggle of kids all sat en masse on the steps of a restaurant patio trying to solve a little toy-store marble puzzle while we all ate risotto inside.) Globetrotting with kids, even occasionally spoiled, complain-y ones, is possible! Photo proof to come.
