The place to talk. "On topic"? "Off topic"? We make no such petty distinctions here.

Listing tweets that belong to a certain genre or format

Ken posted this request on Twitter today:

Hey, what are the classics of this Twitter genre? Links pls.

ME: Niche observation, mildly funny as a standalone.

BEMUSED 2nd PERSON: Something to reveal that this is actual a first date, job interview, traffic stop, grocery checkout, etc.

To me, this is an interesting quest. For some reason, when I see patterns (joke formats like this one) emerge, I have a faint desire to start collecting them. Twitter is so ephemeral, I just let this urge pass.

Anyway, I was able to find a few of these just by googling some of my favorite twitter users names combined with "i meant any questions".

OhNoSheTwitnt likes this format. I think I've seen more than just these two from her:

One more:

This one doesn't exactly fit the format, but it rules:

Can we find more?

Twitter pointed me to some all time classics:

https://twitter.com/crushingbort/status ... 3094831104
https://twitter.com/sireviscerate/statu ... 9268562944

The templatized nature of Twitter jokes makes it tempting to try to taxonomize them. Luckily, I'm not trying to do this. But I am writing a short thing about joke fads and wanted a few Twitter examples.

A couple of other good suggestions for search terms have popped up in the original twitter thread.

Searching "sir this is" and especially "sir this is an Arby's".

Cool. Looking forward to it.

I might have to start collecting some samples of my favorite twitter joke formats. I wonder if any certain twitter users are particularly great at elevating certain formats. Who is the best at this? Maybe danmentos or ch000ch or leon or, if he ever comes out of retirement, murrman5?

Here are some collections I've made in the past (not related to twitter):

Web comics featuring "#1 Dad T-Shirts":

Concept art that's basically "Surprise, I'm an underground monster!"

Just saw a new one from 2014 with 3,000+ likes:

I'm probably going to keep posting to this thread as I find more. I don't know why, I just love documenting stuff.

P.S. Right now, I think my favorite tweet format is this one:

Screenshot of a tweet written earnestly next to a screenshot of an old Dril tweet ridiculing that exact type of tweet.

Examples:

Hey, this is a great addition to the format. Terrific:

Ken, did you ever write the article that was the original inspiration for this forum post?
