The place to talk. "On topic"? "Off topic"? We make no such petty distinctions here.

Hosting a trivia quiz as part of my 40th

Postby jacquilynne » Sun Jan 29, 2017 5:31 pm

I'm throwing myself a 40th birthday party, and as part of the schedule of events, I'd like to conduct a pub quiz. I'm not planning to do trivia *about* me, because that would be boring. Instead, I'm trying to come up with some categories of questions that would be connected with my 40-ness. I'd like to be able to come up with about 10 questions for each category.

Some examples I've thought of:

Celebrities who were also born in 1977 -- either pictures of them for people to recognize or clues about them.
Things that won awards in 1977 -- Oscars, Emmys, etc.
General Trivia about things that happened in 1977, 1987, 1997 and 2007.
What famous people (who are now over 40) were doing when they were 40 -- movies or albums, sports achievements, political offices held, etc.
Give an event that happened and have people choose which of 1977, 1987, 1997, 2007 or 2017 it happened closest to.

I'm not looking for suggestions for questions (though you might want to offer an example of what the question might be like for your category) so much as for types of questions.

Team or individual?

If team, instead of "you know it or you don't" questions, try for some questions where team members can brainstorm answers and the team can debate. This often allows for more fun and interaction. Not sure how to relate it to your 40th, but things like "What are the 4 most populous cities in <whatever state you're in>?", or the 4 colleges in <your state> with the highest enrollment?......perhaps Which 3 teams have won the most super bowls over the last 40 years? Or which actor has won the most Oscars the last 40 years? Etc.

Another thought is listing all of <something> that have happened over the last 40 years...."Name all presidents since I've been alive.". Or all vice-presidents. Or all Summer Olympic sites.

I'm Canadian, so it would be less Presidents and more Prime Ministers, but I really like the idea of a 'name all the PMs since I was born' as a question.

I think probably team, but it depends a bit how many people show up -- if there are only a handful, team won't make sense.

It might be too late, but to spin this, you could have players identify which of a given list are in the top 40 (naming all the top 40 being a bit too big of a task).
