Return to Pic Tac Toe

Postby jbenz » Mon Apr 17, 2017 9:18 am

I'm bringing it back.

Here is a refresher of the Pic Tac Toe rules from the blog:

First post.

Second post.

As I built this, I kept asking myself "what makes a great pic tac toe puzzle?" I think one rule is: no immediately obvious connections on first glance. Alas, there are several obvious ones in this puzzle, but hopefully a couple of these themes are more challenging. I'll think about that for the next puzzle.

Back in the day I made a dozen or so Pic-Tac-Toe puzzles, and I was over-reliant on text. I tried to make a wordless one once but failed miserably. From what I can tell, you only needed text from one of these 9 images. Amazing.

I don't know the 357 diagonal theme, but I have the other eight. If I had to guess, I'd say the 357 diagonal theme is
Spoiler: show
NECKWEAR.

Your 357 diagonal is exactly right.

There is also very specific theme for the left side column, in addition to the general one.

I also used to do Pic Tac Toe puzzles back in the day, including one that remains unsolved. They're fun to solve, but can be a little frustrating to put together.

Here are my answers for yours:

Spoiler: show
123: Pizza

456: Anger

789: Shovels

147: Characters in the upcoming Han Solo prequel (Lando, Han, Chewie)

258: Words in the sentence "Trump eats his pizza with a fork." (Pizza, Trump, Fork)

258: Also, Bridge terms (Queen, Trump, Spade)

369: Donald Duck

157: Donalds (Glover, Trump, Duck)

357 (as per Neel): Neckwear

357 (had Neel not been confirmed as correct): Shaggy hair (Bear, Trump, Chewbacca)

357 (alternate answer): Things that should not be where they are

Yes, Bill is correct.

Spoiler: show
258: Terms used in Bridge or Spades or Euchre or any trick-taking game.

147: I was thinking: Falcon Pilots

357: This is better than neckwear, I claim it retroactively: THINGS THAT SHOULD NOT BE WHERE THEY ARE

Bill, I had somehow forgotten about your 3D Pic Tac Toes.

Amazing stuff. I will try to work on some of those themes. I don't think I ever saw Titan AE, so I will have to figure out those actors.

I just posted the Titan A.E. actors to the thread. Good luck!

Always enjoyed trying to solve these.....and a good time-waster trying to construct them.

I checked some old threads and I'm pretty sure I never posted this one....see if you can find the suitable person/picture for the middle, as well as the 8 themes.

I'll name some of these now, and then think about the middle image.

Spoiler: show
Row 1: Things that soar through the air
Row 3: Woods
Column 1: Big cats
Column 3: Baskets

Now I just need to find something that might be related to:
- golf (or disc golf)
- big ears
- nike
- maybe comes from the midwest?

I just came back to post that the center image is only widely known to people involved with a niche game/sport, so I really wouldn't expect anybody to get it.....and even googling it might be difficult given the scant clues. I probably should have just included it.

Anyway, your 4 answers are correct, as are the first 2 of your 4 remaining thoughts.

This is another almost wordless Pic-Tac-Toe, which is impressive. Leaving out the center square is an interesting idea as long as the themes and images stay simple.

That said, I'm at a loss. It's telling that jbenz guessed the 4 themes that have nothing to do with the center square. More answers and thoughts behind spoiler text.

Spoiler: show
Row 2: INITIALS K.C.
Column 2: BIG EARS (which jbenz guessed first)
159 Diagonal: ROUND THINGS?
357 Diagonal: ATHLETES?

If the center square is about golf and maybe round things and maybe athletes, then Charles Barkley comes to mind, but his initials aren't K.C. and his ears aren't that big. I looked for athletes with the initials K.C. and found Ken Caminiti, Kerry Collins, and Kirk Cousins, which got me nowhere.

If I had to guess, I'd say that the center square is a fictional character (cartoon?) with big ears and the initials K.C. playing golf, with the round hole in view, but I can't think of one.

I did eventually spot this theme, as Neel mentioned:

Spoiler: show
K.C. initials

Which eventually led me to the following pic, but I had to do some photoshopping to make it perfect because...

Spoiler: show
I really wanted the diagonal to be frisbee / disc golf.

The other diagonal could be sports "stars" wearing red.

The column is big ears and the row is "K.C".

But, like I said, this can't be right unless there is another pic somewhere of KC Wolf disc golfing?

Here's my nominee for the center image:

159: Disc (Frisbee, Discs, Disc Golf)

258: Famous for ears (Dumbo, Biting Mike Tyson, Kangaroo)

357: Sport-dominating athletes (Michael Jordan, Mike Tyson, Tiger Woods)

456: Last names of people known for great wealth (Charles Foster Kane, Donald J. Tyson, Bill Gates)

You all are all over it.....but it's simply too obscure.

The center image can be any picture of:
Spoiler: show
Ken Climo - 12-time World Champion in Disc Golf and arguably the greatest player ever
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ken_Climo
Image
Image
(I posted this puzzle on a disc golf message board back in the pic-tac-toe heyday....which was obviously more appropriate....just thought I'd share it here.)

and the missing themes, which have all been guessed by one or more of you:
Spoiler: show
\ disc golf
/ great(est) player (or sport-dominating players)
| ears
- K.C.

Good job and thanks for playing.

Thanks for posting the answer. I love playing disc golf but I'm not familiar with the pros. Would not have gotten this. Still: great puzzle.
