A Series of Terms

Postby Bill » Wed Aug 02, 2017 7:31 am

In 1803, the President of the United States was Thomas Jefferson, President 3.

In 1931, the POTUS was Herbert Hoover, President 31.

If Donald Trump (President 45) serves out his full eight years, and his three successors also serve eight-year terms, then in 2048, we'll be living under President 48.

But if President Trump serves out only one full four-year term, and every subsequent president also serves out exactly one full four-year term, when would be the next time that the last two digits of the year match the number of the president?

I couldn't think of a way to solve this other than to power through. I'll answer obliquely, and in spoiler text:

Spoiler: show
In a Pixar future, cars have taken over, able to drive and govern themselves. Your answer is then either:

-- Lamely qualifying for a few weeks is a German immigrant naturalized in California, OR
-- Officially qualifying one year later is his New York successor, who has a law enforcement background and, like former VP Dick Cheney, always stays in an undisclosed location.

I didn't quite follow that, not having seen the movie in question, but it seems like you've got it.

Spoiler: show
The last 19.5 days of the term of President 53 would be in 2053. That was my intended answer.

It would happen again in the following year, 2054. After that, not until 2187.

Two of those three presidential numbers also match the last three digits of their respective years. When would that happen again?

That's what I got as well.

The other two are...

Spoiler: show
President 720 would be in office for all of 4720, and then President 721 would be inaugurated in January of 4721. That's assuming the inauguration is still in January; a lot can change in 2700 years.
