Is this Cricket?

Postby melissa » Thu Apr 26, 2007 9:27 pm

It is cricket to check your answers, after you've submitted them, isn't it? That's been going around my office a lot lately, and it makes sense to me - IF your answers are already submitted.

But I do think the expression comes from the game, not the insect!

From Dictionary.com, second entry for "cricket", second meaning: fair play; honorable conduct. Very British, old school.

Sweet! That's a new one to me too. Perhaps not quite as good as "that dog won't hunt" among animal-esque adages, but I think I'll start using it anyway.

It comes from the thought that cricket is a very gentlemanly sport which is generally played with the greatest deal of sportsmanship.

That's a sweet expression, too - best said with a sweet tea at one's side. I've used it with a LOT of people who just plain didn't get it!
