Jen, you're absolutely right when you say:

You make your decisions about the individual, based on the actions/words/behavior OF THE INDIVIDUAL

I can safely say I am not judging you based on the color of your skin, your reproductive organs, or the god you worship (or don't worship).

Based on your actions/words/behavior (by that I mean the way you are treating me just for pointing out your bad attitude and very poor debating skills--lol, I mean, LACK of skills) I think you're being snotty, flat-out malicious, angry (without provocation), self-righteous, and hypocritical. OH, and since you can't see how you are acting (or think it's a proper way to behave) AND how you are making absolutely NO sense—I think you're not very bright on top of it all.

I mean CRAP.

Nigel Powers: All right Goldmember. Don't play the laughing boy. There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.

Is the irony flying right over your head or can you feel it dive-bombing, Jen?

By that I mean: It's okay if you don't get it.

Racism isn't a "culture," baby, it's a pretty severe character flaw. And calling me intolerant of racists is one of the highest compliments you could pay me. Thank you.

pointing out

Postby VirgeZ » Wed Aug 09, 2006 9:46 am

I am pointing out in case you didnt know I am a white male age 28. I see my friends and school mates being more lazy than even my sisters age of people. :S which is 4 yearsolder than me. but beyond what I see and think

the spokesmansreview our local paper, has been publishing articles nearly weekly about how lazy and fat they say obiece but I dont know if I spell it right.. and they say that surveys and things have turned up stuff about it. I gues syou can google american obiesety rate. I think its like 80% if I remember right.

I addmited before I mistakenly said white when I really meant american. However in a way this is racism I in NO way intended it as such.

I realize how racist it sounds, but look at fact. Look at our government. Nearly eveyr lawmaker/politician/president/ etc etc etc is white. now look at companies. nearly every higher up, CEO, etc is white. The percentages are horrible. FOr a equal country we do darn little to make it so.

now look at facts on lazy/obiece. it fits in nearly teh same demographic as the rich/well off, politicians, etc. White americans. but Lazyness I am not sure if they have a statistic for. But ot me its comon sense if more people are obiece they are likely lazy. :S

I did my weight to hight body mass index I am in the obiece catagory at 250 lbs, and 6'2".

Now. If anyone has ANY arguement with these things. GOOGLE THEM. There are MANY MANY surveyes ETC how do you spell that lol.. that show americans *more generally white* that are obiece than there ever ever should be :S and I am guiltie to.

So. Please, in the name of all that is good and fun and fair, stop slashing each other. I have read your other posts. Your all nice people and I love you all. Please no more bashing.
its opinion, and its surveyed facts or whatever *like surveys can be called fact* but you know what I mean now I hope.

I really didnt mean to turn loose bees on the forum. I certainly hope you can all drop this in one manner or the other now that I have made myself a bit more clear.

LOL!!!

Jen, you are not getting it at all. I've been trying to illustrate that if you "hate" someone for "hating" other people, that makes you a hypocrite, because you're doing the thing you claim to be against. The offensiveness of racism doesn't make hypocrisy acceptable.

Stop the insanity, and think for two seconds (it may take you a little longer). What you are saying is that if you have a good enough reason (yours is your hatred of—faultily defined—"racism"), it's okay to be mean and hateful to someone—and yet for some deeply galling reason, you can't see where that is laughably hypocritical. Hitler had a good enough reason (in HIS mind) to exterminate Jews, homosexuals, gypsies, and anyone else he didn't like, and by YOUR logic, that's okay!!!!!

Here's another question: If I hated myself for being [whatever race I am], would you hate me for being racist?

As an aside, I know I should drop it, but I have trouble believing anyone could be this stupid. I think it is just that Jen doesn't know how to think critically, which doesn't make her an idiot, but does make her come off like one. :D

missbitesalot, since you clearly think so highly of your own debate skills, how about not putting words in my mouth, ok? Not once did I ever say I hated anyone. Not. Once.

I can think someone's an idiot, and I can think someone's misguided, but that's miles and miles away from hatred. Then again it's not at all surprising to me that you can't make that distinction since you a) have demonstrated that you can't distinguish the differences between racism and the US census, b) think finding someone's opinions are odious is the same thing as racism, and c) have now equivocated my arguments with Hitler. Hitler, for pete's sake! Congratulations, you have just become an internet flame war cliché.

And you call me a lousy debator?

Not to mention that not once in your flurry of attacks (which were curiously free of actual substance, I might add) and "lols" and sarcastic emoticons have you ever denied that VirgeZ original post wasn't racist.*

And as an aside? The only "steaming bowl of hypocrisy" (as you so vividly put it) that I'm seeing here is how you are so comfortable throwing ad hominems at me, post after post -- calling me stupid, calling me slow, etc. -- and yet have the balls take me to task for being snotty. So classy!

Whatever. You're a person who is clearly not interested in genuine debate, and you're definitely not worth my time. I am so, so done here. Finally.

*VirgeZ: I still disagree with you, but I appreciate your trying to clarify your point, and I definitely respect you a whole lot for trying to put this thing to bed once and for all without resorting to ugly schoolyard tactics. Thank you for that, really and truly. My apologies for getting so het up at you personally for this big awful mess.

I don't think I put words in your mouth. I just noted that the way you are conveying yourself was comparable to something I knew you'd find unpleasant, and you still can't see how you're being. Fine. And unlike you, I didn't call anyone stupid, or tell anyone to "shut [the hell] up." I said that you were being ridiculous, sure. And in fact, what I actually said was that I didn't believe you COULD be that stupid, so unless you're demanding, "Oh yes I am!" well...if you really want to champion that cause, then be my guest.

Every time I have started to type something like, "Oh, and by the way, I don't think Virge is racist," I realized that even acknowledging the accusation lends it validity. I don't think Virge is racist, I've moved on to something else because it's so obvious that he isn't, pointing it out would just be redundant. You can't be racist against your own RACE, and it's silly to suggest that a person can. People who don't like their own race typically (OH NOES, I STEREOTYPED!!!) don't like anybody, so we call them "misanthropes." (I like how you dodged my question and really, the point of anything that I've typed thus far.)

I don't think I'm attacking you. I am relentlessly trying to get you to admit that you are a hypocrite, but that's not "throwing ad hominems at" you, "post after post." I am curious to know how you think you have a leg to stand on at this point. If this were an actual debate the second you told Virge he was stupid or to "shut the hell up" (I can't recall which came first), the debate would have been over, and you would have lost, no matter how right you think you are.

Whatevs, this thread was useless a long time ago, if it even WAS useful, but I will admit you irritated me so much that I just HAD to say something, and keep saying something. So good job, I guess, but it's not really that hard to do, so it's a hollow win.

I think I'm the last one to be done with this thread. And yes, unlike some people we know, I can admit that I am annoying and have a hard time dropping things that incense me.

Unfortunately, it'll take more than being "educated" or "tolerant" to avoid stereotyping. You'll actually have to become a different species.

There's quite a bit of psychology research (and seriously, why doesn't anyone ever just use google scholar?) that indicates a general inability to avoid stereotypes, even when you are aware of them and find them repulsive. One example, after the Amadou Diallo incident in NYC (of Springsteen's "41 shots" fame, a sad piece of trivia), a few researchers ran a study in which participants were shown pictures of people holding either some ambiguous object or a gun. They were asked to pretend they were officers and decide whether or not to "shoot" as quickly as possible. In other words, glance at the picture, make your judgment. All participants were more likely to respond "shoot" for ambiguous-object pictures when the actor in the picture was african american, and less likely to respond shoot when the actor was caucasian. This was true for participants of both races.

Interestingly, the effect was more pronounced for participants who were aware of a stereotype of african americans and violence than for participants who had never heard the stereotype before. I'll repeat that, for clarity: simply knowing the stereotype, regardless of whether you believed it to be true, was associated with the racial bias in responding.

Other studies have shown the neural link to racial bias, or at least, our lack of ability to control it sometimes. An ERP component generally associated with inhibiting automatic responses tends to be active when avoiding specific racially-biased responses, suggesting that avoiding a stereotype requires some effort.

Sure, if you aren't making a split second decision, the inhibitory processes in your brain can take over and allow you to make a stereotype-free decision, but the evidence suggests that you have to intentionally steer away from racism. Otherwise, it's just an automatic response that every human makes.

So I'm sorry missbitesalot, you're a racist. So am I. So is Jen. So is Professor John. So is Ken. VirgeZ might not be (not convinced he is human). As long as you know it, and adjust for it... put that extra effort in to avoid it, you can still be a nice person to everyone. However repulsive racism is, though, the fact that we feel influenced by these stereotypes sometimes shouldn't be a reason to feel like we're bad people. After all, we're only human.

But Turing didn't pass the Turing test either???

VirgeZ a bot planted by Ken? Much like the proposed theory that Little Richard was earlier on? (or was his name HUGEDICK?) Eh, whatever...what he proported was to cover the opposite anyway!

Ok Wendall...take your mandatory 3 1/2 min break to think this one over and get back with me.

I actually took three-and-a-half hours this time, and found nothing (<JUSTKIDDING>much like this x-ray of your skull your HMO sent me</JUSTKIDDING>). Except, of course for the misspelling of my name, dear Jon.

And, just for giggles, I wonder if we could have some skilled analyst compare the postings of VirgeZ and the quotes from Ken's son Dylan. Hmmm...

I am very sorry for botching the spelling of your name...how careless and inconsiderate of me. I have spelled it correctly before, but blew it this time. <SINCERITY>I am sincerely sorry.</SINCERITY>

OK...let me break it down:

Some bozo appeared briefly in this forum slaming Ken and I confronted him. His username was <IDIOT PERSONIFIED>HUGEDICK</IDIOT PERSONIFIED>. I suspect he has since been terminated and his ramblings deleted. The Little Richard comment is a play on his bombastic and stupid user name. HUGEDICK versus Little Richard...HUGE v. Little; DICK v. Richard.

So there you have it. Again, sorry I trashed your name.

I, too, must apologize. I GOT the Little Richard reference. I LIKED the Little Richard reference. I just already knew about HUGEDORK and therefore got nothing NEW from your comment. And I wanted to use the "x-ray head" joke.

I steadfastly swear that NOTHING I write here should ever be taken seriously, personally or to the proper authorities for investigation. (And the improper authorities already know).

Except for one thing:

The shortest path between two points is a striaght line.

In nature, thing will follow the path or least resistance.

Why do we feel a need to be rude to each other?

Postby Till_We_Have_Faces » Tue Aug 15, 2006 2:35 pm

The Six Mistakes of Man

1 The delusion that personal gain is made by crushing others.

2 The tendency to worry about things that cannot be changed or corrected.

3 Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it.

4 Refusing to set aside trivial preferences.

5 Neglecting development and refinement of the mind, and not acquiring the habit of reading and studying.

6 Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do.

Marcus Tullius Cicero (106 BC-43 BC)

Roman statesman and man of letters, Cicero was Rome’s greatest orator and its most articulate philosopher. The last years of republican Rome are most often referred to as the Age of Cicero.

Fool Idiot. Front of the line, no waiting. (Bestowed by Professor John). Which line?

What does this have to do with anything? It's a nice quote (as any quote from Cicero is), but I don't really see how it is relevant to this thread. I also don't see why it has to be in that gigantic font--I know I'm myopic, but puh-lease! :P
