You cannot finish this list

Either 10 or 15, but not both, would be clued as "clearly based on Gibson."
  1. Adams
  2. Alexander
  3. Becker (not Haze)
  4. Fay
  5. Fowler
  6. Hatch
  7. Lord
  8. O'Hara
  9. McGillicuddy
  10. Pennino
  11. Pewterschmidt
  12. Ramkin
  13. Rouault
  14. Stemple
  15. Sternin
  16. Tweedy
  17. Woodhouse

Is this based off another puzzle somewhere else, or is it a puzzle you're presenting?

I'm intrigued but I'm not seeing a solution (and honestly, I'm not sure there is one!)

  1. Adams ??
  2. Alexander ??
  3. Becker (not Haze) SPOILER?--> Charlotte's maiden name in "Lolita"
  4. Fay ??
  5. Fowler ??
  6. Hatch ??
  7. Lord ??
  8. O'Hara SPOILER?--> Scarlett's maiden name in Gone with the Wind
  9. McGillicuddy SPOILER?--> Lucy's maiden name in "I Love Lucy"
  10. Pennino SPOILER?--> Adrian's maiden name in Rocky
  11. Pewterschmidt SPOILER?--> Lois's maiden name in "Family Guy"
  12. Ramkin ??
  13. Rouault SPOILER?--> Emma's maiden name in "Madame Bovary"
  14. Stemple SPOILER?--> Jamie's maiden name on "Mad About You"
  15. Sternin SPOILER?--> Lilith's maiden name on "Fraiser"
  16. Tweedy ??
  17. Woodhouse SPOILER?--> Emma's maiden name in "Emma"

It's the mixed media that confuses me a lot—TV, movies, books...

New puzzle, and you have the inclusion criterion and most of the entries - well done.

I am quite sure there is no solution, though googling would probably be required to establish why.

I see your list is alphabetical, which I assume is something you did after compiling the names, but I'm not seeing a connection (other than all of them being fictitious) to try to fill in any others...

Stab in the dark which goes against the one connection I noticed—Is 10 MOORE -> Robyn Gibson's maiden name?

Flipping over the cards

Postby SMWinnie » Mon Feb 06, 2012 6:04 pm

As Ponch sussed out, the list is of maiden names of fictional women of various genres.

In most if not all cases, the wedding is a plot development or backstory revelation of some import.

I'm going to leave these whited out, since #19 in particular is a major spoiler...
  1. Adams - (Kay Corleone, The Godfather)
  2. Alexander - (Susan Kane, Citizen Kane)
  3. Becker (not Haze) - (Charlotte Becker Haze Humbert, of Lolita)
  4. Fay - (Daisy Buchanan, The Great Gatsby)
  5. Fowler - (Amy Kane, High Noon)
  6. Hatch - (Mary Bailey, It's a Wonderful Life)
  7. Lord - (Tracy Haven, The Philadelphia Story)
  8. O'Hara - (Scarlett Hamilton/Kennedy/Butler, Gone With the Wind)
  9. McGillicuddy - (Lucy Ricardo, I Love Lucy)
  10. -
  11. Pennino - (Adrian Balboa, the Rocky series of films)
  12. Pewterschmidt - (Lois Griffin, Family Guy)
  13. Ramkin - (Lady Sybil Deirdre Olgivanna Ramkin-Vimes, The Duchess of Ankh, of the Discworld novels)
  14. Rouault - (Emma, the titular character of Madame Bovary)
  15. -
  16. Stemple - (Jamie Buchman, Mad about You)
  17. Sternin - (Lilith Sternin-Crane, of Cheers and Frasier)
  18. Tweedy - (Molly Bloom, Ulysses)
  19. Woodhouse - (Mrs. Knightley, the titular character of Emma)
The reference to entry 10 & 15 being "clearly based on Gibson" was meant to lead to Alice Gibson Kramden, though that probably would have required some google-fu (bing-jitsu?).

So #15 is Slaghoople?

So #15 is Slaghoople?

And #10 is Pebble

Thus the title

Ponch and skullturfq are both right...but can't both be right.

Credit also to Ponch for suggesting Robyn Moore, the former Mrs. Mel Gibson. Her maiden name would fit neatly into slot #10, but she is a real human being. Her former husband, on the other hand, now qualifies as being so certifiably bat-guano insane that he has gone out the other end. Mel Gibson is now so nutso that he would be less believable as a fictional character than "Mad" Max Rockatansky.

Due to a continuity error, Wilma Flintstone's maiden name was canonically (if one can point to a Hanna-Barbera canon...) given both as Pebble and Slaghoople.
