How many people usually come to the World Quizzing Championships? Are there sponsorship opportunities?

We had 200+ take the test in North America last year, and we would like to double that this year. There should be a number of new countries joining the fray this year, bringing the total to 40+ with about 3000-4000 participants.

There now appears to be a location in Sherman Oaks -- at the Robin Hood Pub, same spot as last 2 yrs -- for those in Los Angeles who might be closer to that than to Long Beach. Nice break for me, since that's a 3-mile drive instead of a 40-mile drive.

Of the 8 catagories, I only got a passing grade in 2. All my other marks were between 9 & 12.

Brutal. Just brutal.

You gotta do it for the thrill of it. I did about the same as I usually do, but was a little rattled when the guy whose score sheet I was grading in the first round was running up serious numbers. I was worried that the test was so easy that I'd be humiliated by all and sundry. Turns out, though, that guy was Joon Pahk, so I feel less stupid now.

LOL, I just thought the same thing.
He will stop it though when you enter the competition with an "Enough already" battlecry and DESTROY both Perry and the English with a 197 score.

Yeeesh. On the positive side, I guess I finally broke that 2nd-in-LA streak. Tremendous job by Steve -- I could have worked on those questions all day and still wouldn't have approached 174. Great job by Patrick as well. And Yogesh, for both his 152 and his somehow still being under 30 ... didn't I play against him, like, 11 years ago??

My thanks to the organizers and question setters, especially Paul Bailey for all his hard work here in the states. Looking forward to the next one.

Yep. It's amazing what one can accomplish when Neil Schon is no longer holding you back.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. What's scary is that I had a couple of brain farts (Cambyses II for example) and crossed out three or four correct answers following some very tortured reasoning. Even that wouldn't catch the top score, though - a remarkable performance by Jesse Honey, whose name sounds like a pop singer's, too.

Perhaps next year - I think we are due for an American or five atop the leaderboard. Thanks again to Paul Bailey for being the glue holding all this together.
