Week CCCIV, Question 3

Postby Joshua Kreitzer » Mon May 14, 2012 10:49 pm

What U.S. metro area, one of the five largest in the country, never had a professional baseball team named for it until this season? The Florida Marlins, as part of their new deal with their home city, renamed themselves the Miami Marlins during the offseason.

Actually, there had been professional baseball teams playing in and named for Miami before this season. They just weren't major league teams. In fact, there had been two other Miami Marlins professional baseball teams before this season, one in the International League and the other in the Florida State League. (The FSL team also played at various times as the Miami Hustlers, Miami Orioles, or Miami Miracle.)

Also, the Miami metro area isn't one of the top five in the US, at least according to Wikipedia.

Argh, that should have been "major league" and "urban area." "Major league" was just a brainfart--obviously, Miami's had "professional" teams before, even minor league teams are professional--but I genuinely didn't know the difference between "urban" and "metropolitan" areas until now. Good to know.
