I now approach those from the get-go with an eye towards figuring out the trick. It does use a method I've never seen before, though.

This is one of the oldest one of these. . . .

Your two-digit number is 10t+u.

10t+u-(t+u)=9t, a multiple of 9. Note that all multiples of 9 have the same symbol.
